Food for Thought.

Journal Entry: Mon Nov 9, 2009, 4:10 PM

[Edit] In case you hadn't noticed, us cheapasses get journal skins for a few days, and, as I like this journal, and I'm not likely to write a new one for a long time, I'm just tacking a whole bunch of stamps and this note onto it. (How many stamps, I ask you? These aren't even half of the ones in my favorites.)[/Edit]

I have just seen the most profound movie ever. Bar none. And it's an anime.
I am not joking. It is brilliant, and you've probably never heard of it. It's called The Sky Crawlers, directed by Mamoru Ishii.

Here's the Wiki summary of the plot:

"The Sky Crawlers is set in an alternate history where, although the world is at peace, in order to ease the tension of a populace accustomed to war and aggression, private corporations contract fighter pilots to stage combat operations against each other for show. The film introduces a mystery involving characters called Kildren (キルドレ Kirudore?), humanoids genetically designed to live eternally in adolescence until shot down in air battles presented commercially for entertainment, after which they are reproduced."

It is, to my understanding, about several key points:

:bulletgreen: The purpose of war, or rather, the basis of peace.
One of the characters, Kusanagi says (admittedly, while drunk, but it still holds) that peace among civilians can only exist when war exists. Only when there is a present basis for comparison can it be appreciated and upheld.

:bulletgreen: Why one lives, or continues to do so.
The main character, Yuichi, makes a very powerful speech towards the end of the movie. I cannot remember the exact words, but it's something like "You can control which side of the road you walk down, even if it is still the same road. Even if you're walking on the same road, you can find something new." Another of the characters, Mitsuya (as well as Kusanagi) earlier brings up the question of "why do we bother". She gives an extremely powerful impassioned speech, but I cannot for the life of me remember even the gist of it.

:bulletgreen: It also touches on the concept of reincarnation, as the Kildren have idiosyncrasies, both visual and in their actions, and they hold through in their replacements.

But, yeah, go rent it or something, well worth it.
(Also, I think I'm gonna drop out of NaNoWriMo, sorry guys.)

I just stumbled across my old blog, and it is some of the most hilarious shit I have ever read.
Okay, just keep in mind that at the time of writing this I was 11, thought emo was the coolest thing since sliced bread, and had just abandoned my friends to move out here (that's California). So, yeah, the summer before eighth grade was fun. And the first couple of months of eighth grade as well. I don't think any of you knew me back then, though.

So, yeah, comparison: my blog then: [link] vs. my blog now: [link] (that's tenth grade for those of you who don't know me personally).

Definitely some major growth there. Gawd, I sound like fucking Tara Gillespie through some of that first blog.
*shot*

Still, hope it gives you guys some laughs, and if you had shit like this when you were younger I really want to see it.

Yupyup. 14 years ago, a psychotic baby was brought to this Earth.
I got a proper drawing table, a little mini-sketchbook, a big sketchbook, and Jhonen Vasquez's Squee. Supposedly my dad shipped me something else, but I don't think the postal service works sundays. (Just had a mental replay of the scene in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone where Harry says "there's no post on Sundays", I have no idea why I'm telling you this.)

I want cake...

Contest, back, and Ponyo.

Whoo~ Loadsa stuff for this journal. Let's start with the most important bit:

:iconmikanmaymay: is holding a contest! Actually, technically, I'm holding a contest for ~MikanMayMay. Aaanyway. The contest is that you have to draw a cover for Mahy's story, Shattering Glass. Due on October 15th. Prizes are a whole shitload of art from me: 2 finished fullbodies, 2 pencilled waist-ups, and an inked headshot. Judges are me, ~MikanMayMay, and an anonymous judge (who I can't for the life of me remember who it is). Guidelines: Has to include the title, Shattering Glass, and cannot have any of the characters in it (oh, and you have to have read the story, but that's a fucking no-brainer).

:iconguardianyuzuki: posted a journal about it as well.

Next up!
In case you hadn't noticed, I'm back from vacation.

I was in Yosemite, hiking, biking, and whitewater rafting. And it was awesome.

Lastly!
Ponyo! Fucking adorable! Go see it! Fucking hell, I love Sosuke and Ponyo's dad. Ponyo's dad is fucking awesome and my absolute fucking favorite character.

... I'd go on longer, but :iconmikanmaymay: is making me post this now.

So, as none of you probably noticed, I was gone for a couple of days, and the reason for that is that I was in San Francisco. It was pretty awesome, and as my mum put it, we spent most of the weekend eating. As such, this journal is going to be mostly about food, with some tidbits of info about activities I did squished in. If that bothers you, stop reading.

We got there pretty late on Friday night, and me and my stepdad were hungry, so we spent forever looking for somewhere to eat, and ended up having burgers.

Saturday morning we went down to Pier 39, and I had the greatest lemon crepe known to man. And then we tried to get tickets to Alcatraz, and then found out you had to buy them 2 weeks in advance. And then we went sailing on the bay, which was awesome. After that, more food! I think that was the first time I'd ever had crab, and I made a mess of it, but it was fun. The parents then insisted on nap time (I don't get why adults have to sleep so much. //hypocrisy//). Finally: sushi! We went to this place where the sushi bar was a big round island in the center of the room with boats floating in a little stream around it and you just pick the sushi off the boats. I don't think I've ever eaten that much sushi at once.

Sunday I had crepes again, and then went biking across the Golden Gate bridge, on which I had a panic attack (I'm afraid of heights), but other than that the rest of the ride was fun. And then we had lunch (fishfishfish~), bought my younger siblings some Ghirardelli so they wouldn't hate us for going without them, and went to the airport~.

Funnily enough, as I sit here typing this, I am once again eating. So this journal is brought to you by fruit loops.
